Chris Miller (music) and Nathan Tysen (lyrics) are the songwriting team behind the critically acclaimed Broadway musical Tuck Everlasting (Outer Critics & Drama League nominations, Best Musical). Their off-Broadway work includes The Burnt Part Boys (Lucille Lortel Nomination, Best Musical) and Fugitive Songs (Drama Desk Award Nomination, Outstanding Revue), all of which are available for licensing, and have cast albums on iTunes and Amazon. They were recently commissioned by Concord Theatricals and the Educational Theatre Association to write a show specifically for high school performers, and that musical, Dreamland (or a musical riff on Shakespeare’s Midsummer set during the declassification of Area 51), debuted at the International Thespian Society and is now available for licensing. Current projects include Revival, based on Willa Cather’s short story "Eric Hermannson’s Soul", and Blown Sideways Through Life, based on the play by Claudia Shear. They have also written two circuses for Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey, contributed to the revue Stars of David, collaborated with the Broadway Inspirational Voices, and penned an adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s book "The Mysteries of Harris Burdick". Television work includes songs for Sesame Street (2012 Daytime Emmy Award), Elmo’s World, and The Electric Company.
Together, Miller & Tysen are proud recipients of awards and grants from Fred Ebb, Jonathan Larson, Richard Rodgers, Samuel French, Daryl Roth, Kitty Carlisle Hart, ASCAP, and the NEA. They began their collaboration at NYU, where they received their MFAs in musical theatre writing. They are proud members of ASCAP and the Dramatists Guild.
Separately, Miller wrote co-arrangements and co-orchestrations for the John Logan/Avett Brothers Broadway musical Swept Away, also co-producing the Broadway Cast Recording on Joy Machine Records; a song cycle for soprano and orchestra setting the poetry of Willa Cather entitled Prairie Songs & April Twilights; book, music, and lyrics for Ravello (Commissioned by Signature Theatre (VA) American Musical Voices Project) and The Goats for Grove Entertainment & Barbara Whitman. He is a contributing composer to Mark Campbell’s song cycle, Songs From an Unmade Bed, produced at the New York Theatre Workshop. In 2010, he co-composed the first New York revival of Angels in America with Michael Friedman, directed by Michael Greif at the Signature Theatre (NY).
Tysen’s additional West End and Broadway credits include The Great Gatsby and Amélie (Grammy and Olivier nominations). He was also Tony-nominated for his work on Paradise Square. Additional credits include the cult-favorite musical web series A Killer Party and the rock theatre piece Stillwater with his band Joe’s Pet Project. In 2016, he received the Kleban Award for most promising lyricist. He is also a director/writer for Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts, creating original musicals with young adults for over two decades.
